South Africa: Maruleng community marks Human Rights Day

The Maruleng Local Municipality hosted a Human Rights Celebration at Sedawa Community Hall on the 21st of April 2026, bringing together community members, traditional leadership and service providers to strengthen awareness of rights and support services. Councillor Masete Elsie guided the programme, which opened with a welcome from the Batlokwa Traditional Council.
Naledi Masipa, from Gender Links, set the tone by outlining the purpose of the gathering and encouraging active participation. Stakeholders including Hoedspruit Victim Empowerment, the Department of Social Development, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Commission for Gender Equality shared information on human rights, prevention of violence and available services. Participants engaged openly through questions and discussion, making the session practical and relevant.
Masipa also introduced the work of Gender Links, emphasising collective action for equality. “Gender Links is not just an organisation; it is a movement that turns voices into action and communities into spaces of equality,” she said.
SAPS Constable Malele highlighted that violence affects everyone and challenged misconceptions that prevent men from reporting abuse. The programme closed with declarations, a vote of thanks from the Batlokwa Traditional Council and closing announcements, reinforcing a shared commitment to human rights and dignity for all.
