Botswana: Batsalelwang makes history in boxing

Lone Batsalelwang, a boxing Referee/Judge (R/J) at Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) has officially attained her IBA star 3 certification, making her the first woman in Southern Africa to acquire this achievement. As it stands, IBA star 3 is an international certification for boxing referees/judges. It therefore certifies her to officiate at world boxing championships and tournaments.

"I recently got my certification in Nairobi, Kenya. It is a huge achievement for me and Botswana boxing. I worked hard, put in the effort and got the training. I am proud to represent Botswana on the international stage as this means everything to me. It is a testament to my hard work and dedication; therefore I am excited and I want help refereeing and judging in Botswana boxing to grow,” Batsalelwang shared.

The Ramotswa native has been boxing R/J for 22 years. She has won national titles and represented Botswana internationally. As one passionate about promoting women boxing in Botswana, the boxing referee hopes to inspire more women. As such, through this milestone she looks forward to mentoring the girl child.
