South Africa: Pride in Action-The Growing Voice of Majawie Safe Space

A Safe Space Becomes a Movement

Majawie Safe Space began as a sanctuary. A place where LGBTIQ+ individuals could breathe freely in a world that often denied them dignity. Founded on compassion and activism, Majawie’s mission was clear: to uplift and protect those facing systemic marginalisation. Over time, this vision grew beyond the walls of a physical space, transforming into a vibrant community force in Worcester, Delft, and Belhar.

For years, LGBTIQ+ people in these communities endured isolation, stigma, and violence. Schools lacked inclusive education, and healthcare systems often failed to recognise diverse identities. Against this backdrop, Majawie Safe Space emerged as a beacon of hope, offering not only refuge but empowerment.

The Change: From Shelter to Catalyst

Today, Majawie Safe Space is more than a safe haven. It is a trusted presence and a driver of change. Through regular dialogues, social support sessions, and advocacy, Majawie has created environments where LGBTIQ+ individuals, especially young people, can gather without fear of judgement or harm. These spaces have reduced isolation, built confidence, and fostered acceptance. Over the past year, Majawie intensified its focus on education. Workshops in schools and community halls introduced critical conversations on identity, inclusion, and human rights.

Topics ranged from understanding SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Expression, and Sex Characteristics) to rights-based approaches in education and healthcare, tackling stigma and trauma, and building resilience. These sessions empowered learners and allies alike, creating ripple effects of awareness and solidarity.

How Did This Change Happen?

The transformation was not accidental. It was intentional and deeply rooted in community listening. Majawie nurtured local LGBTIQ+ leadership, co-created programmes with those most affected, and forged partnerships with schools and allies. When discrimination demanded a response, Majawie stepped forward boldly, evolving from a support space into a hub for education, healing, and activism. Visibility brought responsibility. Majawie engaged in public hearings, mobilised campaigns, and partnered with stakeholders to challenge violence and exclusion. Each step reinforced its commitment to love, dignity, and collective resilience.

Quotes

Jackye Majawie - The organisation Majawie Safe Space NPO Delft Pride would like to sincerely thank the Triangle Project for your invaluable contribution. Without your support, our events would not have been possible. On the day of the event, we held a march to address gender-based violence, hate speech, and hate crimes within the LGBTIQ+ communities. Many people came out in large numbers to join and celebrate Pride on 31 May 2025. The community has been empowered and is now more open-minded toward the LGBTIQ+ community.

Quote 2:

Juliana Davids - Majawie Safe Space has grown not through a sudden shift, but a steady, intentional journey, driven by lived experience, local leadership, and passion. Quote 3:

Vinolia Sadukwana - Majawie Safe Space focuses on addressing Gender-Based Violence and Intimate Partner Violence. This growth is inspiring, and we’re excited to continue working together.

Sustainability and Next Steps

Majawie’s journey is far from over. The organisation plans to scale its impact by investing in local leadership development, ensuring community members lead programmes and advocacy efforts. Strengthening partnerships with schools, NGOs, businesses, and policymakers will broaden support networks. Documenting best practices will enable replication in new areas, while diversified funding will secure long-term sustainability. Majawie Safe Space stands as a testament to what is possible when communities unite around dignity and inclusion. From Worcester to Delft and Belhar, its voice grows louder—a voice of pride, resilience, and hope.
