South Africa: Growing Hope, One Community at a Time

Planting Seeds of Change
In the heart of Mangaung, South Africa, a quiet revolution is taking root. Led by Obakeng Mathe, affectionately known as Mr Green, the MT Foundation has become a beacon of hope for communities grappling with poverty, gender-based violence, and the growing threat of climate change.
Before Mr Green’s intervention, many vulnerable groups especially women, children, and people with disabilities lacked support. Schools were ill-equipped to address climate education, and young people faced unemployment and limited opportunities. Girls were particularly affected, facing bullying, exclusion from science subjects, and a lack of access to basic needs like sanitary pads. Mental health support was scarce, and climate change was an abstract concept with real consequences. The community needed a catalyst for transformation and they found it in Mr Green.
Cultivating Hope Through Action
Thanks to the MT Foundation’s tireless efforts, change is now visible and tangible. Vulnerable groups receive targeted support, girls are empowered through dignity packs and education, and young people are gaining practical skills. Schools have become hubs of learning and environmental stewardship, with food gardens sprouting at Tiny Tots ECD and Kgato Primary School. These gardens not only provide nourishment but also serve as living classrooms for climate education.
The Foundation’s work is rooted in collaboration. Mr Green partnered with local schools, women’s groups, and youth to understand their needs and co-create solutions. Capacity-building workshops hosted by Gender Links and WVL equipped him with the tools to lead effectively. From climate awareness campaigns to mental health talks and anti-bullying initiatives, the MT Foundation has woven a fabric of care, learning, and resilience across the community.
Story of Change Quote:
The impact of this work is best captured in the voices of those it has touched.

Mr Green and his team have changed how our people see climate issues. These gardens and campaigns have brought hope, skills, and unity to our community — Community Leader in Rocklands
Quote 3:
Before, I didn’t know where to go for help. Now, because of the talks and pamphlets from the MT Foundation, I know I can go to the police, call the GBV Command Centre on 0800 428 428, or ask the local clinic for support — Community member
Sowing the Future
The MT Foundation is committed to sustaining and expanding its impact. Plans are underway to grow more food gardens, train additional youth volunteers, and deepen partnerships with schools and local businesses. The Foundation is also exploring self-sustaining models, such as using rental property income to fund its initiatives.
Gender-based violence survivors will continue to receive support through dignity packs, awareness campaigns, and safe referral systems. Mental health, anti-bullying, and girls’ empowerment through STEM education remain central pillars of the Foundation’s mission. With Mr Green at the helm, the community is not just surviving it is thriving, one garden, one child, and one act of kindness at a time.
