Zimbabwe: A woman's journey through the waste management value chain

My name is Passion Kadiri, I am a determined single mother who has overcome incredible obstacles to build a better life for myself and my child. With the support of Gender Links, funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe, I have transformed my life and become economically empowered.

As a hair and beauty products retailer, I faced numerous challenges, including delayed payments, limited access to capital and intense competition. However, I persevered and adapted, finding innovative ways to reach my customers and stay ahead in the market.

Through Gender Links' training programmes, I acquired essential skills in business management, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. These skills have enabled me to increase my income levels, become financially independent, and provide a better life for my child.

Through Gender Links, I embarked on an innovative journey in the waste management value chain. Our initiative focuses on collecting, sorting and processing waste, which is then transformed into valuable products.

We offer a range of products, including floor polish, shoe polish, pavers and tiles made from plastic cement. This venture not only generates income but also contributes to a cleaner environment by reducing waste.

I am proud to be part of this sustainable initiative, made possible through Gender Links. By turning waste into valuable products, we are promoting a more environmentally friendly approach to waste management, while also creating economic opportunities.

My journey has not been without its challenges. I have experienced gender-based violence and abuse, which has had a profound impact on my life. However, with the support of Gender Links and the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe, I have been able to overcome these challenges and become a confident, economically empowered woman.

Today, I am proud to say that I am able to fend for myself and my child. I have increased my income levels, expanded my business, and become a role model for other women in my community. I am grateful for the support of Gender Links and the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe, which has been instrumental in my success.
