The good news is that Zambia is on track to achieve gender parity in primary school enrolment as well as in literacy among 15-24-yearolds The Programme for Advancement of Girlsâ € ™ Education introduced in 1994 has provided effective advocacy and support in this regard. However, accelerated intervention is required if gender parity is to be achieved in secondary and tertiary education. In addition, the country has moved backwards on womenâ € ™s participation in government in both local councils (6 percent) and parliament (11 percent). Zambia will have to introduce special measures to even come close to the MDG target of 30 percent women in parliament â € “ or the AU/SADC target of 50 percent. There is need to ensure full nd effective participation of women across all spheres
