Malawi: Geared to fight digital gender-based violence

The article reports on the growing challenge of digital gender-based violence in Malawi and efforts by government and stakeholders to address it. It highlights a case involving musician Lady Aika, who experienced online harassment through manipulated images shared on social media, illustrating how technology is being used to target women.

The story draws on research and official statements to outline the scale of the problem, citing high levels of cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and online sexual exploitation affecting women. Malawi Human Rights Commission chairperson Chikondi Chijozi and Minister of Gender Mary Navicha both emphasise gaps in digital access for women, weaknesses in enforcement, and the need for stronger institutional responses.

The article underscores the public interest importance of creating safer digital spaces, noting that digital violence undermines women’s rights, dignity, and participation online. It frames the issue as a national responsibility requiring legal action, public awareness, and collaboration across government, technology companies, civil society, and communities.
