Introduction

Located 185 km south-east of Mutare, the provincial capital of Manicaland, and about 500 km from Harare, Chipinge Town lies just 40 km from the Mt Selinda border post with Mozambique. Its strategic position along the border makes it an important centre for trade, services, and cross-border exchange.
Home to a population of 34,959 residents across 9,353 households, Chipinge serves as the administrative headquarters of Chipinge District. Just 50 kilometres northwest of the town, on the Sabi River, stands one of Zimbabwe’s iconic landmarks, the Birchenough Bridge, a major national heritage site and gateway to the wider Manicaland region.
Chipinge Town Council also plays a leadership role in advancing gender mainstreaming in local governance. It serves as a spoke council under the hub-and-spoke programme, mentored by Mutare City Council, promoting inclusive and gender-responsive development.
