Chinhoyi municipality formerly known as Sinoia, has blossomed into a vibrant community situated 120km North-West of Harare, serving as the provincial capital of Mashonaland West.

Introduction

Chinhoyi municipality has a history that dates back to 1893, forged in pursuit of gold and minerals. Formerly known as Sinoia, Chinhoyi has blossomed into a vibrant community situated 120km North-West of Harare, serving as the provincial capital of Mashonaland West. The town lies on the main road, Highway, between Harare and Chirundu, at the international border with the Republic of Zambia, about 250 kilometers, further northwest of Chinhoyi.
It boasts of a University, Chinhoyi University of Technology. It is also known synonymously for the natural heritage site, the Chinhoyi caves. It is nestled in a region known for its prowess in cattle farming, tobacco cultivation, and mining (particularly copper and mica extraction), the town thrives economically. Chinhoyi Municipality anchors the hub and spoke programme as the hub council for Mashonaland West urban councils in the hub and spoke programme for gender mainstreaming. It serves 27,766 households with an average of 3,7 per household.


Key Achievements

Chinhoyi has been accepted and awarded a certificate of membership by UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in its commitment to lifelong learning.
Council allocated more marketplaces for women than men as a way of balancing the gender inequality.
Council converted a Mt Tikwiri beerhall into a clinic to promote the health delivery system.
