Bulawayo City Council is implementing the Promoting Gender Inclusive Local Economic Development in Zimbabwe programme under the Arts and Culture value chain.  The project seeks to refurbish the Bulawayo Home Industries, Handcraft Skills Training and Production Centre. The ultimate goal is the use of arts and crafts as a tool to promote local economic development. The programme also seeks to strengthen procurement policies and gender LED plans in Bulawayo. 

Bulawayo is the second largest city in Zimbabwe and the largest city in the country with a population of 665,940 (46% male and 54% female). Bulawayo covers an area of about 546 square kilometres in the western part of the country, along the Matsheumhlope River. Along with the capital Harare, Bulawayo is one of two cities in Zimbabwe that is also a province. The local authority is also a hub of excellence, mentoring Lupane Local Board, Hwange Local Board and Victoria Falls Municipality

Key Achievements

85 women were awarded tenders for vehicle hire for vaccines immunisation processes thereby promoting women inclusion within council procurement processes.

Council has designed and allocated 10,744 market spaces, 54% were women, 33% men, 12% youths and 1% persons with disability. 

Council awarded tenders to women owned businesses such as Trade toppers, Privian International, Rascomy Investments, Sideline Trading, Gladevale Trading, Gladevale enterprises, Linkage trading and Water Tight Engineering were awarded contracts.
