Gokwe Town Council at FIFITY- FIFTY GENDER EQUAITY

Gokwe town Council is located in Midlands province of Zimbabwe. In terms of gender awareness its blessed because the top leaders are female i.e. The P.A. is a woman Mrs Chitiyo, the D.A. is a woman Ms R.Chingwe the mayor is a woman councillor S.Senga, and the town secretary is a woman and a vibrant gender driver, a two time winner as a gender focal person, Ms M.Mandeya. This profile Gives Gokwe the energy to propel fly high in gender activities.The town is located 140km west of Kwekwe. Economically it is an agrarian area the major crop being cotton. For the three consecutive years the cotton seed could not fetch the desire producer price and this affected the town inflows heavily current the debt rests at a figure above one million.Gokwe town has six managers of which one is a female who is also the town secretary. It also has six councillors and five are male and one is a female who is the mayor.Gokwe was proclaim at Town by his Excellence the President of Zimbabwe in 2007. Since then it has moved tremendously. They have managed to acquire a tipper truck, a front end loader and three executive cars and installed some streetlights. Of much more significant is the magnificent town house. It is now planning to install traffic lights.At this rate with the engagement of a new vibrant, and strategist Ms M. Mandeya I see the town being conferred with the municipality status very soon.The strong women at the helm will help in the creation and implementation of gender policies. Currently we are preaching the fifty –fifty gender equality.
