Mauritius: Pride 2026, a celebration of unity followed by a call for respect

Pride 2026 was one of the most vibrant and inspiring celebrations of diversity ever witnessed in Mauritius. Under the theme "Ansam Nou Pli For" (Together We Are Stronger), hundreds of community members, allies, families, civil society organisations, diplomatic partners and supporters came together in Plaza, Rose Hill, to celebrate love, inclusion and equality. 

The event highlighted the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community and demonstrated that Mauritius continues to move towards a society where everyone deserves to live with dignity and respect. The atmosphere throughout the day was one of joy, solidarity and hope. Through music, performances, community stands, awareness activities and the Pride March itself, participants proudly affirmed that diversity is a strength and that inclusion benefits society as a whole. 

Unfortunately, in the days following Pride, this celebration was overshadowed by a significant increase in hate speech, online harassment and even death threats directed at members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The volume and severity of discriminatory comments, violent rhetoric and targeted abuse served as a stark reminder that, despite the progress made, prejudice and intolerance remain real challenges in Mauritius. In response, Collectif Arc-en-Ciel (CAEC) publicly condemned these acts and reaffirmed that freedom of expression can never be used to justify hate speech, threats or incitement to violence. Through its legal clinic, CAEC has been documenting reported incidents, supporting affected individuals and exploring appropriate legal action where necessary. Community members have also been encouraged to preserve evidence and report incidents to ensure that victims receive the support they need. 

While Pride 2026 showcased the very best of Mauritius, a community united in celebrating diversity, it also highlighted the work that remains to build a society where everyone can live openly and safely. CAEC remains committed to advocating for equality, promoting respectful dialogue and ensuring that no one should ever fear violence or discrimination because of who they are. Together, we continue to believe that love, respect and human dignity will always be stronger than hate.
