Lesotho: Embracing our differences, a call for understanding

Embracing Our Differences: A Call for Understanding reflects the Trans History Week theme “We’ve Always Been Here. We Can’t Be Erased.” by centring the lived reality of a transgender woman in Lesotho whose life, work, and advocacy challenge both invisibility and stigma.

Through her story—as a trans woman, a sex worker, and an HIV activist—the article affirms that trans lives exist at the intersection of multiple struggles, yet remain grounded in resilience, agency, and leadership. Her voice disrupts silence in spaces where trans people, particularly those in marginalised livelihoods, are often excluded from mainstream narratives and policy conversations.

Rather than framing her solely through vulnerability, the piece highlights her as a knowledge holder and advocate, using lived experience to confront discrimination, expand understanding, and push for dignity and rights. It exposes how social stigma, legal gaps, and systemic exclusion continue to shape trans lives, while also showing how individuals actively resist and navigate these barriers.

By connecting personal narrative to broader questions of justice, health, and human rights, the story challenges the myth that trans identities are “un-African” and instead positions them as deeply embedded within the social fabric of Lesotho. It ultimately calls for a shift from tolerance to recognition—affirming that trans people are not asking to be included, but are already here, shaping their communities and demanding to be seen, protected, and respected.
