2010 Gender and Media Progress Study - Southern Africa

The GMPS took place against the backdrop of the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development in August 2008 which set 28 targets to be achieved by 2015, including 50% representation of women in all areas of decision-making. The Protocol also encourages the media to ensure that women and men have equal voice and that gender stereotypes are challenged. It specifically calls for gender sensitivity in the coverage of gender violence recognised as a particularly challenging area of coverage.
