South Africa: The Community Development Worker at Heart: Sanelisiwe Driving Change

Story
“I am happy to see the changes that this Programme is making, and I thank God that I am part of the people driving the change.” These words perfectly capture the spirit of Sanelisiwe Mnguni, a passionate young woman from Pietermaritzburg who has dedicated herself to empowering others through community development.
Sanelisiwe first encountered Gender Links through the Phakamisa Girls Economic Empowerment Programme in 2021, when she joined Sasopsbiz Foundation as an intern. Her role was far from ordinary. She was tasked with working closely with the HUGS (Helping Us Grow Spaces) network, organizing workshops, and managing Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for the organization.
From the outset, Sanelisiwe demonstrated exceptional commitment and creativity. She didn’t just fulfil her responsibilities; she infused them with energy and innovation. Her ideas brought a fresh perspective to the Programme, making activities more vibrant and appealing to young women. Whether it was planning events or brainstorming strategies, her contributions consistently elevated the impact of the initiative.
Her dedication goes beyond the office. When there’s an event, you’ll find Sanelisiwe on the ground sometimes literally kneeling to paint banners or setting up spaces to ensure everything runs smoothly. Her organizational skills and reliability have made her an indispensable part of the team. Every workshop she coordinates is a success, not just because of her efficiency, but because of the passion she brings to empowering others.
Through her work, Sanelisiwe has become more than an intern; she is a driver of change. Sanelisiwes's efforts have strengthened the program’s ability to reach and inspire young women, creating opportunities for economic empowerment and leadership development. She embodies the values of feminist leadership collaboration, inclusivity, and transformation.
Reflecting on her journey, Sanelisiwe says:
“I am happy to see the changes that this Programme is making, and I thank God that I am part of the people driving the change.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that changes begin with individuals who care deeply about their communities. By investing in young women like Sanelisiwe, programs such as Phakamisa and organizations like Sasopsbiz Foundation, supported by Gender Links’ Women’s Voice andLeadership (WVL) Programme, are building a generation of leaders who will shape a more just and equal society.
Sanelisiwe’s journey proves that when young women are given opportunities and support, they don’t just grow they lead, inspire, and transform lives.
