Policy

In 2001 GL produced “Whose News: Whose views: A Southern African Gender and Media Handbook”. Several manuals and guidelines have been developed for mainstreaming gender in government policies and programmes. Few such materials exist for the media. The development of a simple handbook for media practitioners on how to mainstream gender within their institutions and in their editorial products was an essential beginning.

Since the launch of the GEM handbook GL has worked with media houses and regulatory authorities on gender and HIV and AIDS policies. GL's three key policy interventions include:

  • GL has worked with on a number of pilot projects with media houses in the region to develop gender policies.
  • The Media Action Plan on HIV and AIDS and Gender is a multi pronged strategy to mainstream gender, HIV and AIDS into all facets of the media house, GL has been been leading the policy roll out arm of MAP.
  • Working with regulatory authorities to mainstream gender in the institution as well as the work of the of the regulator.
