It has now been ten years since the launch of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The goals, which include targets to move toward ending hunger and the spread of HIV and AIDS, were embraced by many in the development community and civil society, including in southern Africa. However, ten years on, many African countries are not much closer to reaching the 2015 targets than they were at the turn of the century. At the same time, there have been many notable achievements - and some terrible failures - in creating awareness and legislation around the MDG targets.
As world leaders meet in New York to accelerate MDG progress at the 10-year point, Gender Links will be taking stock of the situation in southern Africa and shining a critical light on some of the key issues in the region.
Gender Links will host a debate and discussion: MDGs @ 10 -- Still missing the gender mark? on Tuesday 21 September from 15h00-17h00. For more information or to take part click here.
IPS (Inter Press Service news agency) in collaboration with GL, has produced a magazine for the MDG summit. Download the MDG issue of TerraViva. .
