Mauritius - GBV Indicators

Country Filter:

The GBV Indicators research has been implemented from 2010 to date in collaboration with the Mauritius Research Council. Researchers from MRC recruited 678 men and 679 women from across the country for the prevalence and attitudes survey. Preliminary findings from the survey are available here.

The GL Mauritius Satellite office conducted the remaining research activities including the collection of first-hand accounts of GBV experiences and perpetration, the collection of available administrative data on GBV and the political discourse analysis.

Findings from the study show that almost one in four (24%) of women experienced some form of GBV at least once in their lifetime, while 23% of men admit to perpetrating some form of GBV at least once in their life time. This shows a disjncture between the extent of physical, sexual and economic IPV reported by women and men as women report a higher extent of experience compared to the extent of perpetration reported by men.

The study also investigated different individual and community factors associated with GBV perpetration by men. According to the study, men who were sexually abused as noys are more likely to perpetrate violence against their intimate partner. Twenty one percent of men sexually abused as children perpetrated IPV.

Other key findings include fairly similar but low levels of awareness of GBV campaigns with 37% of women and 38% of men admitting knowledge of campaigns to end GBV. Every four in five (82%) men agree that campaigns to end violence against women help to chage attitudes of men.
