GL is an active member of the global 50/50 campaign, and has been active in promoting women's equal representation and participation in decision-making at local and national level. See the quotas paper produced for the campaign.
The research on At the Coalface, Gender and Local Government has been distilled into fact sheets that are distributed to the councillors, officials and the media at training workshops. GL also produced a DVD which draws on examples and cases studies from Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland to demonstrate the impact of different electoral system and the use of quotas on increasing women's representation in decision making positions. Annual Gender Justice and Local Government Summit and Awards
The first ever gender justice and local government summit and awards was held in Johannesburg South Africa from the 22 - 24 March 2010 with awards to five women and four men whose work on the ground won the highest accolades from judges and participants during presentations. The summit featured 103 entries from ten countries in a variety of categories including prevention, response, support, individual innovation, institutional good practices, specific GBV campaigns and innovative communication strategies and awards brought together journalists, local government authorities, municipalities, NGOs and representatives of ministries of gender and local government.
The second annual gender justice and local government summit and awards was held in Johannesburg South Africa from the 28 - 30 March 2011 with awards to six women and two men whose work on the ground won the highest accolades from judges and participants during presentations. The summit featured 124 entries from nine countries in a variety of categories including prevention, response, support, women empowerment, leadership, 16 Days campaigns (and Cyber dialogues), COE excellence awards and institutional. Under the banner "365 days of local action to end gender violence: halve gender violence by 2015" the summit and awards brought together journalists, local government authorities, municipalities, NGOs and representatives of ministries of gender and local government. On the evening of 30 March 2011, Gender Links awarded eight winners, nine runners up and nine special commendation awards at a colourful gala dinner that was held at the Summer Place in Sandton, the award ceremony coincided with GL's 10 year birthday celebration.
The 2012 regional summit and awards will take place from the 18 - 20 April 2012 and in-country mini-summit will be taking place in Botswana, Mauritius, Madagascar, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Interest in the GJLG summit and awards has grown dramatically over the two years. GL received 25% more entries in 2011 than in 2010. In-country summits have several advantages at national level including broadening participation and sharing of knowledge within each country; raising the COE profile; strengthening ownership and partnerships and increasing competition for the regional summit as only the winners at national level proceed to the regional summit. Therefore six out the ten countries that GL is currently working in will be hosting in-country mini-summit where the winners at the in-country summits will be then compete at the regional summit.
