This paper describes the political and societal impact of social media on southern Africa, discussing the increase of social media technologies in the region as a tool for development. It looks at ways social media is being used to empower women and other disadvantaged groups, analysing its use as a conduit for spreading key human rights messaging, including information and campaigns around HIV and AIDS and gender-based violence. Further, it presents the case study of Gender Links, a regional organisation working in the media, and its history of social media, from online dialogues to the incorporation of Facebook and Twitter into its work.
