Bertha Amakali was one of the winners in the category of Individual Innovation at the first Gender Justice and Local Government Summit awards held in Johannesburg in March 2010 (see sidebar for citation). Following the award, the local newspaper Informanté wrote a story entitled "Polytechnic of Nam Lecturer Hijacks Award.” According to Amakali, the story contained a lot of misappropriation of facts and she lodged a complaint with the Namibian Media Ombudsman, Clement Daniels.
