Media Literacy Course South Africa

(7)

Following the success of its pilot projects, Gender Links has continued with its Gender and Media Literacy Course for members of the General public. The first phases of the course were conducted in 2006 and 2007. 2008 saw 23 participants from diverse backgrounds graduating on the 10th of December. In 2009 a course was held at Stellenbosch University.

This course is based on the general principles of media literacy: that any citizen in today's information era needs to know not just how to read, count and write but also how to interpret what they are told by the media. The toolkit draws from research and training material developed over a number of years on gender and the Southern African media. The kit consists of a binder, "core" exercises and notes. The modules allow for maximum participation and creativity on the part of learners, as well as adaptation to local circumstances. The binder format allows participants at whatever level or in whichever location to add to the basic texts their own collection of material based on the numerous exercises and assignments. The materials also take account of the Outcomes Based approach to Education (OBE).
