South Africa's 6th-place standing in the World Economic Forum's 2009 Gender Gap Index shows that the country's egalitarian policies are bearing fruit in the labour market. However, not included in the index's indicators are the disproportionately high HIV infection rates amongst women, and the shockingly high levels of gender-based and sexual violence. Clearly, the nation is far from gender parity when
these factors are considered, and both women and men both need to be equally empowered personally and socially.
