Xenophobia has become a serious issue in South Africa, peaking earlier on this year, when pandemonium broke out in the townships in Johannesburg. Women migrants were particularly vulnerable to attacks in the form of sexual assault and verbal abuse. Most media reports during this period failed to bring out the gender dimension to the crisis and incidences of gender violence especially sexual violence in the holding camps mostly went unreported or under reported. Local community leaders and civic groups have maintained that the official statistics on the extent of the Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the camps can never be accurate.
