Gender Violence and Elections

(2)

Friday 5 December 2008

All persons have the right to life, free from physical or psychological violence and political intolerance.  Women and men should have the right to participate in all electoral process free for any form of violence. Violence before and after elections is a reality in southern Africa. According to iKNOW Politics, women politicians have identified violence or threat of violence as a significant impediment to women’s political participation. Very little information exists on this form of violence against women in southern Africa.  It is underreported and not well documented.
